Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological condition that affects movement, muscle tone, and posture. It results from damage to the developing brain, often before, during, or shortly after birth.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cerebral palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a child’s ability to control their muscles.
Common Causes Include:
- Lack of oxygen during birth
- Infections during pregnancy
- Premature birth

Types and Symptoms
Cerebral palsy can vary widely in severity. A child may experience:
- Spastic CP: Stiff or tight muscles
- Ataxic CP: Poor balance and coordination
- Dyskinetic CP: Uncontrolled or involuntary movements

Can It Be Cured?
Cerebral palsy is a lifelong, irreversible condition, and currently, there is no cure. However, early treatment can significantly improve quality of life. Many children with CP are able to attend school, work, and lead fulfilling lives with the right support.
A study published in The Lancet Neurology highlights that early interventions and family-centered care significantly improve functional outcomes in children with cerebral palsy.
Globally, CP is the most common motor disability in childhood, affecting about 1 to 4 out of every 1,000 children.
Key Points to Remember:
- CP is a lifelong condition
- It affects movement, posture, and coordination
- It is not contagious
- With proper therapy (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy), children can gain independence.
- Support for parents and caregivers is essential
